This piece took 40 hours to create over a period of about 3 months. The molding paste takes about two weeks to dry, and then the base layer of underpaint (the purple, red and yellow) takes another month to dry completely. After that I apply the white filament layer with a very small brush. This is the most time-consuming component, but it is also meditative and time goes by very quickly as I'm creating. This piece has particularly deep ridges, which makes it interesting to look at from different angles. Please message me if you would like to see photos of the painting from other angles.

My inspiration in creating this piece:

I wanted to create a larger texture piece with a yin and yang (balance) of both form and color. I wanted to explore further the motif of waves on a textured surface with colors that spoke to me.

A man walked into my studio while I was applying the underlayer of deep purple on this painting. I work in an art studio which is also a gallery, so people can watch me in the process of creation. The man said the deep purple layer reminded him of the sands of Bali, how when the lava hits the water it fragments into a thousand pieces creating black sand, which, with the reflection from the sky, transformed the water to a deep purple instead of the usual blue. Every time I look at this piece I think of this transformation; how beautifully delicate and explosive that transformation would be.

This a 24" wide by 12" tall oil painting on wood-cradled Masonite board. It comes with a coated wire on the back, ready to hang.
