ABOUT THE ORIGINAL: These are largely butterflies and moths from a butterfly pavilion outside Phoenix, AZ, where I took some of my first photographs that inspired this series. This piece is the only one in the series with a yellow background, and where I solidified on the idea of a 2:3 aspect ratio for the piece. It’s also only one of two pieces in the series painted with acrylics (Succulent Tango was the other); after this piece I moved to oils exclusively for this series. It took me some time to master painting sharp edges in oils, which I found easy in acrylics. Several classes at the Art League School helped me manage the transition. The increased blending time available in oils was a real boon for further pieces in this series.
